Petronas Towers
The Petronas Twin Towers
Foreign tourists going to Malaysia are impressed by its modern transport system. When in the city capital of Kuala Lumpur (considered as a gamma global city), it is very easy to reach most of its modern commercial establishments and shopping malls. Even the more popular interesting tourist sites are within walking distance or at least just a short ride away. Malaysian laws are very strict because of its Islamic culture and punishments can be considered harsh by standards of other countries. It is this strict implementation of its laws that tourists can move around safely because the locals are afraid to commit petty crimes against visitors. The one important thing to remember is that foreigners caught in possession of illegal drugs can face long prison terms and even execution. Despite all these, Malaysia is still an appealing destination for most tourists because it is exotic and its culture viewed as somewhat strange by some people.
Its foremost attraction are the twin towers which were designed by Argentine-American architect Cesar Pelli who was commissioned by the Petronas Company of Malaysia (the national oil company of the country). It was finished in 1998 and claimed the title as the tallest buildings in the world until eclipsed by Taipei 101 back in 2004. The twin towers have 88 floors each and were constructed from reinforced concrete which is cheaper than steel. Both towers have a total complement of 78 high-speed elevators with a skywalk at the 41st and 42nd floors between the two buildings. The two towers were even featured in a 1999 blockbuster movie “Entrapment” starring Scottish actor Sean Connery and the very beautiful Catherine Zeta-Jones. These twin towers are imposing during the day and simply brilliant during the night when lights are turned on. It is a sight to behold like no other you will ever see!
